Nigeria Hydrological Agency Warns Against Flooding Disaster

In July 2012, Nigeria was hit by a major flooding disaster, which claimed the lives of about 363 people with over 2 million others displaced.
Over 2.6 trillion naira worth of properties was lost to the incident, recorded as the nation’s worst in the last 40 years.
As part of effort to check a reoccurrence of the disaster, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency in 2013 kickstarted the annual flooding outlook with mandate to predict possible future flooding incidences and put in place measures of control.
Speaking at this year’s edition of the Annual exercise in Abuja, minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu called on Nigerians to take advantage of information generated by the NHSA to avoid catastrophic consequences.
On his part, Director General, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Clement Nze, shared possible solutions to avert and control flooding disasters in Nigeria.
This year’s event, which was attended by numerous stakeholders in the water sector is themed: The Role of Efficient Hydrological Services in National Development.
