The Army Headquarters Garrison of the Nigerian Army began its annual 2018 Corporals and Below competition with special concentration on intensive training and combat efficiency with a view to keeping its soldiers operationally fit and effective to tackle emerging challenges.

The competition which is expected to last for five days had Soldiers grouped into three Team. They included Team A – made up of twenty Soldiers from the Department of Training and Operations, Department of Army Standard and Evaluation, Legal Services and Army Resource Centre, among others.

The Team B – made up of fifteen Soldiers from the Department of Civil-Military Affairs, Military Police, Intelligence Corps, among others.

Team C – is twenty four Soldiers from the Army Headquarters Garrison departments.

Events to be competed include Parade, Race, drill, skill at arms, and shooting competition among others.

Declaring the competition open, the Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison, Maj Gen John Myam stated that the competition is one of the scheduled army activities, which is organised primarily to remind participants what to do as soldiers while also improving junior leadership traits, as well as their organisational ability and calculative initiative.

Maj Gen Myam enjoined participants to compete healthily while striving for victory, as it will equip the participants with professional skills which is also in line with the Chief of Army Staff Vision which is to have a Professionally Responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its Constitutional Roles.

The Nigerian Army under the current Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai has given topmost priority to training of its personnel. Training as it well established in the Nigerian Army, provides the platform to gain skills and professional judgment. No matter the sophistication of the weapons and equipment , the mission goals can not be realised if the users are not trained. In effect, training is the critical element that builds and sustains professionalism.

Against this backdrop it is hoped this year’s Corporals and Below Competition will achieve it’s objectives, positioning Nigerian Soldiers top among its contemporaries across Nations.
