PDP in turmoil as NEC members resign, blame Secondus

A fresh crisis of confidence has hit the Peoples’ Democratic Party as seven members of its National Executive Committee resigned from their offices on Tuesday.

The seven officers who resigned were Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Diran Odeyemi; Deputy National Legal Adviser, Ahmed Liman; Deputy Women Leader, Umoru Hadizat; Deputy Auditor, Divine Arong; Deputy National Organising Secretary, Hassan Yakubu; Deputy Financial Secretary, Irona Alphonsus and one other whose identity was not known.

In their separate resignation letters, the party officials cited “bad treatment” by the PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus as the reason for their action.

Chairman of the PDP Deputy National Officers Forum, Diran Odeyemi, who spoke from London said he aligned himself with the decision of his colleagues “to resign.”

Confirming the development, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, said “The NWC of our great party at its meeting today received the notice of the resignation from deputies who are elected members of the National Executive Committee.

“The meeting of the NWC and the deputies immediately took place to dialogue on the issues that were raised. The party will look into the grievances raised by members of NEC as well as members of the National Working Committee.”

He said the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanism has been activated.

National Youth Leader of the party, Ude-Okoye, who spoke to the journalists shortly after the NWC meeting blamed Secondus for the crisis.

He said “Mr. Uche Secondus, the national chairman of the party is incompetent of managing the affairs of this party, he lacks the managerial capacity to manage PDP.

“He had made sure that many departments of the party did not function as effectively as they ought to function. Mr. Chairman has nothing to offer to the party, only to come here and deceive us.

“Today, I have asked him in our NWC meeting to resign his position as the chairman of this party because he cannot lead this party to victory.” He threatened to leave the party should Secondus remain in office.

The PDP Governors’ Forum while expressing sadness over what they described as the rumblings within the party following the resignation of some leaders.

This was contained in a statement titled, “PDP Governors call for calm, ask detractors to leave PDP alone”, signed by the PDPGF Chairman, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State.

The statement read in part, “The Governors hereby call on all members of the party and indeed all stakeholders to remain calm in the face of the developments.

“We plead with all aggrieved persons and those with the interest of the PDP at heart to keep their gun powder dry, as efforts are being made in consultation with members of the PDP Board of Trustees and other stakeholders to resolve all contending issues.

The governors promised to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the affairs of the Party and forge a way forward. PUNCH
