NSCDC arrests three suspected petroleum smugglers in Delta

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps has arrested three suspects conveying illegally refined petroleum products along the Ughelli-Port Harcourt Expressway in Delta State.

The State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Iskilu Akinsanya, stated this on Saturday while parading the suspects at the Command headquarters in Asaba, the state capital.

Akinsanya said the command had received a mandate from the force headquarters to double efforts at securing critical national assets, to coordinate activities of private security outfit, especially in the area of information gathering and to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.

He said, “When we inquired from them the content and then the papers, it was discovered that it was an illegally refined product.

“Investigations revealed that the suspects operated between Delta, Rivers, Benue and the South West with their base in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.”
The commandant who described their act as inimical to the economic development of the country said the suspects would be charged to court after investigations.
Confessing to having committed the crime, the suspects claimed that it was their first attempt at the illegal operation.
One of the suspects, the driver of the truck, Mr. Abayomi Peters said he was contracted by one Alhaji to convey the product, noting it was his first time on such a mission“I was not aware that it was an illegal product. The person that gave me is Alhaji, he stays in Ibadan. This is our first time.”
