Masked officers storm clinic, evacuate Dino Melaye

Masked men suspected to be policemen on Friday stormed the police clinic in Garki, Abuja, and whisked away Dino Melaye, the embattled Senator representing the Kogi West Senatorial District at the National Assembly.

It was learnt that the operatives planned to take the lawmaker to Lokoja, Kogi State, for interrogation over the alleged shooting of one Sgt. Danjuma Aliu by suspected political thugs.

But following public outcry, a source said the policemen moved the lawmaker to the Department of State Services’ medical facility along Airport Road, Abuja.

The source informed our correspondent that the evacuation of the lawmaker was carried out around 2:15 pm in commando style.

The Senator had claimed in an interview with journalists on Monday that he was not fit to travel to Lokoja where the case of culpable homicide was being investigated by the Kogi State Police Command.

Meanwhile, the police said it had obtained a warrant to keep Melaye in its custody for 14 days.

Moshood explained that the warrant which was obtained from the Federal Capital Territory High Court on January 9, 2019, to enable the police to investigate Melaye for criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide.

He disclosed in a statement in Abuja on Friday that Melaye was moved from the Police Clinic, Abuja, to DSS medical facility due to complaints from the senator that he was unwell.

The statement said, “The Police medical team at the police hospital certified that Melaye is well and healthy to stand trial after treating him.

“However, due to complaints from Senator Melaye that he is not well, the Police Investigation Team has taken him this afternoon (Friday) to another government hospital, DSS Medical Facility in Abuja for further medical attention.
